Barbie Comes to Max with American Sign Language Version This December

In a groundbreaking move for inclusivity, Barbie is set to make its streaming debut on Max, along with an American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation.

Starting December 15 at 3 a.m. ET, Max subscribers can enjoy Barbie’s journey, now with enhanced accessibility through ASL.

This move is a result of thorough research and feedback from the Deaf community.

Max’s commitment to inclusivity is further evident with the ASL version featuring ASL Performer Leila Hanaumi.

To make this unique presentation easily identifiable, the app will display a sign language symbol in the film’s key art.

Celebrating this milestone, Margot Robbie, who portrays Barbie in the film, will host a special community screening on December 14 in Los Angeles in collaboration with Deaf West Theatre.

The timing coincides with the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, emphasizing the importance of increased accessibility for all.

Barbie initially made history as Warner Bros.’s highest-grossing global release in its 100-year history, following its theatrical release on July 21, 2023.

Directed by Greta Gerwig, the film not only secured its place as the 15th highest-grossing film of all time but also claimed the title of the highest-grossing film by a female director.

The success continued when Barbie became available on Video On Demand (VOD) in September.

In the film, Margot Robbie’s Barbie is joined by Ryan Gosling, who plays Ken. Together, they embark on a journey of self-discovery sparked by an existential crisis.

The screenplay, credited to Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, is complemented by a supporting cast featuring America Ferrara, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Will Farrell, and Rhea Pearlman.

Max, originally established as a premium streaming service, expanded its offerings in October by venturing into the world of live sports.

Notably, the platform is set to provide live coverage of NASCAR races starting in 2025.
