Amazon Converts Fire TV Cube into Affordable Desktop Computer

Amazon has unveiled a cost-effective solution for businesses by transforming old Fire TV Cubes into budget desktop computers.

Priced at $195, these devices are repurposed with a custom-built operating system running on Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Aimed at addressing the needs of companies, especially in high-turnover environments like call centers,

the Fire TV Cubes offer a more economical alternative to traditional laptops and desktops.

The initiative, named Amazon WorkSpaces Thin Client, is designed to provide companies with a swift and affordable way to get employees online for everyday office tasks.

Melissa Stein, the director of product for End User Computing at AWS, explained that customer feedback highlighted the demand for a lower-cost device, particularly in dynamic work environments.

To meet this need, Amazon leveraged the hardware used for the Fire TV Cube, avoiding the necessity of designing and building new hardware and passing the resulting savings on to customers.

These budget-friendly Fire TV Cubes, currently not available for public purchase, are targeted directly at companies seeking to utilize AWS to replace Windows or Chromebooks.

According to Amazon, the $195 Fire TV Cubes can effectively replace computers costing $600 to $1,200 each.

Rather than running applications directly on the device, the Fire TV Cube streams them from Amazon’s AWS service.

The older model Fire TV Cubes, with 16GB of storage, 2GB of RAM, and a Hexa-core 2.2GHz and 1.96GHz processor, are deemed powerful enough for typical office work.

Amazon emphasizes the simplicity of the devices, their enhanced security features (no data storage on the device,

reducing the risk of data leakage), and ease of management for IT administrators through the AWS Management Console.

In addition to being cost-effective, the Fire TV Cubes offer streamlined security features and simplified device management,

making them an attractive option for companies looking for efficient solutions in dynamic work environments.
